True Healing -- The first death is a mistake; "the second death hath no power."

We ask, "Why am I here in a material body?" That's a mistake. The right question is the inverse, "Why am I not here? Understanding the answer to that question is true healing.

A mother gives birth to a child. In that instant, the child is separated from its mother. Like his parents before him, he is called a mortal child, meaning a child that dies or death child. Human birth figuratively represents our dilemma -- a conviction that we have been separated from our real Mother, God. This belief of material birth is called the first death ? the first instance of belief in death. The Christian Science Bible Lesson titled, "Probation after Death", addresses this issue directly. Humanly, our probation begins with the belief of material birth. Jesus was born of Mary, but, because of her pure and sacred conception of him, he was able to maintain his divine connection. Therefore his probationary period was swift. Yes, even the fleshly Jesus had to overcome the temptation of disconnection with God because of Mary's human condition and her belief that she was bearing an infant, but he never gave in to that temptation. He never believed it possible to forget his divine conception. Jesus was constantly alert to and living as the Mind of God.

If we are diseased, impoverished, or fearful, our first inclination is usually to do everything in our power to fix the discordant condition -- to make ourselves well, to make money, to search for happiness, etc. Our first inclination and the real solution, however, should be to remember that these situations are merely tests of our fidelity to Father/Mother God. We must prove for ourselves, first and foremost, that we are not here, separate and alone, but permanently at-one with Love, Life, Truth. Mind is not now and never was separate from its idea, man. Acknowledgement of this truth is the solution to all earth's so-called problems ? have the Mind of God and be well.

Every time we are healed through prayer, every time we are impelled into a better way of living, or find ourselves blessed with friends and family, we give thanks for the improved condition, but it is our divine conscious connection that confers true healing and makes these improvements possible. "The Lord our God is one Lord"; acknowledgement of this fact initiates all healing. Knowing that we cannot be separated from our source is where the power lies. The events of this world will lose their sting when we realize that they all must give place to the realization that "I do not live here and never did."

"It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life" (John 6:63). Therefore, no condition of flesh can harm God's man.

The threat of a second death was never anything more than the final test of our understanding that we are now, and have always been at-one, at rest, and home, where the quest for healing is unknown because perfection does not need healing.
